Die Herren kommen vom Bluegrass, sind selbigem aber längst entwachsen. Ein genialer Mix von Pop, Swing, Rock, Kammermusik und ja, etwas Bluegrass ist auch drin. Eigentlich ein eigenes Genre. Das Ganze extrem virtuos dargeboten – instrumental wie vokal – dazu mit einer gehörigen Portion Groove.
Ich stehe auch total auf die minimalistische Herangehensweise, was die Aufnahme- bzw. Verstärkungstechnik angeht: ein bis zwei gute Mikros am Bühnenrand, der Rest ist Stellungsspiel. Just like in the old days.

Habe über den Dokumentarfilm “The Art Of Improvisation” die Musik von Keith Jarrett neu für mich entdeckt. Das Solo-Zeug, die Sachen mit Gary Burton und das Über-Trio mit Gary Peacock und Jack DeJohnette. Was für ein großartiger Musiker. Man möchte hinzufügen: was für ein eingebildeter Kerl. Aber er kann es sich erlauben. Der Mann hat Unglaubliches geleistet. Ein großer Romantiker, Improvisator und Entdecker.

Freddie Hubbard, einer der ganz großen Trompeter, ist im Alter von 70 Jahren an einem Herzinfarkt gestorben. Sein Spiel ist mir in besonders guter Erinnerung von den Mittsechziger Blue Note-Alben von Herbie Hancock. Wenigstens musste er nicht lange leiden.

Eric Idle dürfte den meisten Leuten als Autor von “Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life” bekannt sein. Er ist der Musiker unter den Pythons. Im Jahre 2003 ist er mit einem Soloprogramm in den USA unterwegs gewesen und hat parallel in seinem Blog ein Tour-Tagebuch geschrieben. Betrachtungen über Amerika und die Unterschiede zum “alten” Europa, alte Python-Geschichten, jede Menge Name-dropping. Wirklich witzig.

Hier kann man nachlesen, wie man an ein Hang kommt. Der aktuelle Stand zusammengefasst: man bewirbt sich per Post oder Fax beim Hersteller (zwei Schweizer). Wenn man eine Zusage erhält, hat man die Möglichkeit, sein Hang entweder persönlich im Hangbauhaus in Bern abzuholen oder es sich zuschicken zu lassen. Ein Hang kostet 1200 Euro.

Ich persönlich finde es sehr schade, dass die beiden Erfinder die Herstellung nicht lizensieren. So könnten viel mehr Menschen in den Genuß dieses wirklich tollen Instruments kommen.

Ich wusste gar nicht, das es die verrückten Schweden noch gibt, zuletzt habe ich die Anfang/Mitte der 90er gehört. Mittlerweile höre ich ja kaum noch Metal, wenn dann meist Pantera oder Metallica, aber alter Schwede! Das ist Musik, die Weghören unmöglich macht. Und das Video ist ziemlich witzig.

Habe grade das Buch “My Bass And Other Animals” von Guy Pratt zuende gelesen. Hilarious. Selten so gelacht.

Mr. Pratt ist ein Bassist. Seine bekannteren Arbeitgeber sind/waren Pink Floyd, Robert Palmer, Robbie Robertson, The Smiths, Gary Moore, Madonna, Jimmy Page. Zur Zeit tourt er mit Roxy Music. Er ist außerdem mit Rick Wrights (Pink Floyds Keyboardspieler) Tochter Gala verheiratet.

“My Bass…” ist eine ziemlich scham- und schonungslose, dabei sehr komische Sammlung von Geschichten von Tourneen, Studio sessions, Parties und Drogen. Vom “life in the fast lane”, sozusagen. Er ist gleichzeitig Akteur und Fan, viele der besten Passagen handeln davon, wie ein Jungspund sein Idol kennenlernt. “…and then Bernard Edwards waved at me. Bernard Edwards of Chic! Bloody hell!”

Das Buch ist im Gefolge von Guy Pratt’s in England sehr erfolgreicher stand up comedy show gleichen Namens entstanden. (YouTube hat ein paar clips davon.)

Musikern, Leuten, die die Musikszene der 80er und 90er Jahre miterlebt haben, Freunden des englischen Humors sei dieses Buch wärmstens ans Herz gelegt. Gibt’s bei amazon.

Habe gerade das neue Album von Beady Belle gehört. Die Band um Sängerin Beate S. Lech und Bassist Marius Reksjø ist um diverse Gastmusiker erweitert. Es gibt viel Gitarre (Akustik, Reso, Pedal Steel), Banjo und Mando, ein Novum für diese Band, die das Album außerdem selbst produziert hat. Noch mehr Soul (es gibt ein Duett mit India.Arie), mehr Jazz (ein Duett mit Jamie Cullum, die offensichtliche Single-Auskopplung), mehr Dreck, mehr Wärme. Weniger Electronica.
Beate S. Lech hat es wieder geschafft, sich zu steigern. Wer die alten Alben mochte, wird dieses lieben. Schade, dass es mit knapp 39 Minuten sehr kurz geraten ist.

Das dazugehörige Album hab ich damals rauf und runter gehört (wie auch die anderen frühen Alben, “Twang Bar King”, “The Lone Rhinoceros” und “Desire Caught By The Tail”).
Für diejenigen, die ihn nicht kennen: er hat in den späten 70ern bei Zappa gespielt (v.a. auf “Sheik Yerbouti”), dann bei David Bowie, den Talking Heads, bei King Crimson und The Bears. Außerdem: Nine Inch Nails, Paul Simon, Tori Amos, Laurie Anderson u.v.a.
Mr. Belew ist immer noch aktiv: bei King Crimson (wie seit Jahrzehnten), mit seinem eigenen Power Trio und wieder mit den Jungs von The Bears. Ein wirklich außergewöhnlicher Gitarrist und Sänger.

Bei den Recherchen zu diesem Artikel (*hust*) bin ich auch auf Keith Carlock gestossen, das ist der Drummer aus dem obigen Video. Er spielt u.a. auch in der Band von Donald Fagen und Walter Becker (remember them?). Von dem gibt’s bei youtube auch ne ganze Menge. Der Typ erinnert mich sowohl von der Physis als auch vom Drumming an Edward Filipp, einen phantastischen Drummer aus Niedersachsen, der früher meinem Bruder Schlagzeug-Unterricht gegeben hat. Was der wohl heute macht?
